In early-March 2021 were announced major itinerary program changes with only Britain coastal mini-cruises and 7-day roundtrips from Southampton. During this traditional event, under the keel (first hull block, where the bow thrusters are mounted) was placed a bronze coin (from Isle of Iona's Abbey) and a slice of green marble (also from the island). This block (#18) is part of the bow section and has weight 461 tons, length 21,5 m, width 19,4 m, height 9,8 m. The "coin ceremony" was attended by Paul Ludlow (P&O Cruises UK's President), Stephan Schmees (Meyer Werft's Executive Board Member / Project Management) and Jurgen Storz (Meyer Werft's Project Leader). Like on all new passenger liners, Iona's construction blocks (hull and superstructure) are pre-fabricated then floated out to the shipyard for assembling.

Standard Balcony Cabin
Iona's cruise itineraries are 7-day and 14-day in length and include extended port stays (with late-night departures) that allow travelers to sample the local nightlife. Hike up Dun I (the Hill of Iona), the island's highest point, where you can take in sweeping views of the port's extraordinary landscapes. Reservations are recommended for those hoping to eat at one of the few restaurants on the island. Plan your trip to Iona with our upcoming Scotland cruise itineraries. The label has similarities to the sunset logo from P&O Cruises and star constellations on the inside.
Night Western Europe
Please book early as this was mostly fully-booked on my trip. P&O Cruises has really set the bar high with dining onboard Iona. This isn’t just some of the best food I’ve eaten at sea, it’s some of the best I’ve ever experienced. Quite frankly, I don’t know where to start when it comes to the cuisine.
Other P&O Cruises cabins
These seven night cruises usually visit Hamburg, Rotterdam and Zeebrugge. The December one provides the opportunity to visit some European Christmas Markets while the ones during the school holidays provide the chance for a family break. At the start and end of the season, the cruises have a port of call in Alesund. In the middle of the season this is replaced with a stop in Hellesylt (and a cruise by the UNESCO World Heritage site of Geirangerfjord). Next tables show the ship's inaugural voyages by destination. All itineraries are roundtrips from homeport Southampton England.

The vessel has 3x LNG tanks (cryogenic steel) with total capacity ~3200 m3. Two of the tanks are larger (length 35 m / 115 ft, diameter 8 m / 26 ft, gas capacity 1525 m3), while the 3rd tank has length 28 m (92 ft), diameter 5 m (16 ft), and gas capacity 520 m3. On April 25, 2018, at Meyer Werft's Papenburg Shipyard was held the steel-cutting ceremony (hull S-715), which officially started the vessel's construction (Meyer Werft's 50th cruise liner). On February 22, 2021, started the construction of the sistership Arvia (2022).

Well firstly, there is freedom dining throughout the ship included in the price. There are four main dining areas and a few other casual places included in this. Some restaurants have a traditional buffet selection; albeit no longer self-served due to CoronaVirus protocols. These spacious cabins are perfect if you want a more economical way to travel and prefer to be out and about experiencing the ship or reclining up on deck by the pools. This includes the four main dining rooms which are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the Horizon Restaurant, which is the buffet.

In each port, a collection of shore experiences will take you to the heart of Norway’s astonishing natural wonders and diverse cultural attractions. Like most large-sized newbuilds, the P&O ship Iona is LNG-powered, with 4x engines generating combined output 61,7 MW. The propulsion system is based on two Azimuting thrusters with combined power output 74 MW.
There’s usually live acoustics around and always a waiter on hand for drinks. Having joined the P&O Cruises fleet in 2021, Iona is the largest cruise ship ever built for the British market. Offering capacity for 5,200 guests, she captures the essence of modern cruising and boasts many enhancements, the likes of which have never been seen on a ship before. The SkyDome is another 'wow' moment at first sight and a first for P&O Cruises, too.
Rise and Triboo are performed at the SkyDome, while Dream is at the Atrium. Two new aerial shows (Virtuosi, Spark) are scheduled for Iona's inaugural season 2021. Iona offers Freedom dining exclusively in the Pearl, Coral, Aqua and Opal restaurants.
In the evening, the Headliners Theatre plays host to West End-style performances, stand-up comedians and cabaret act, while the adults-only 710 Club offers a laid-back atmosphere and a fantastic cocktail menu. Here on my little corner of the internet I share cruise tips, cabin reviews, port guides and packing tips to help you plan a great cruise holiday. Since I started cruising I’ve had a few friends ask me if I get bored onboard a cruise ship. Having nothing to do and being stuck on a ship seems to be one of the reasons people think a cruise is not for them.
On Norwegian Fjords itineraries, the menus are upgraded by chefs Skjelde and Forsberg. Skjelde developed a special 6-course Norwegian food tasting menu for "The Epicurean" restaurant. The boat has 8 laundrettes (self-service laundry rooms for passengers). The largest passenger accommodations are the 2-Room Sky Suites (400 ft2 / 37 m2 plus 110 ft2 / 11 m2 terrace/step-out balcony).
As I’ve mentioned above, she is designed to let the outside in, and what more perfect place to marvel from the comfort of the Atrium than the majestic Norwegian Fjords? I even wrote about all the fantastic Norwegian Fjords Excursions you can do, in advance of Iona’s launch. There was no better live music venue than the 710 club (if you can get in). The cosy and very intimate venue has partnered with no other than Gary Barlow as the musical director.
There are four main dining restaurants (Aqua, Coral, Opal and Pearl), all of which are located on Decks 6 and 7. Offering flexible seating in an elegant environment, the main dining rooms are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and routinely feature Gala nights, devised by P&O Cruises’ food hero, Marco Pierre White. Many cruise ships traditionally offered a club dining concept, this is where you have a set time and table to eat at each night. With so many bars and restaurants, food on Iona offers plenty of variety and you really could eat and drink somewhere different every day.
Designed to be more environmentally friendly, Iona is powered by liquified natural gas (LNG) making her one of the greenest cruise ships in the world. Iona’s Norwegian Fjords holidays give you the opportunity to explore one of the world’s most iconic destinations. The itineraries have been carefully designed as an introduction to the region, offering something for everyone.
